After breakfast, the 1st day of this 7-day Fes desert tour will be mainly dedicated to exploring the intellectual and spiritual center of Morocco. Thanks to the fact that Fes is the oldest city in Morocco, it is very rich in cultural and historical sites. On our trip we will visit a variety of sites such as Al Karaouine University (the oldest university in the world), the beautiful tennaries (Chouara tannery is the largest in the world) and the Nejjaraine fountains. After lunch we will visit the iconic gate of the Royal Palace, take a walk through the old Jewish quarter (Mellah) and visit a pottery workshop. Before ending our day, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Fes. Overnight stay in a riad in the medina.
After leaving the city of Fes, the next destination of the 7-day desert tour Fes is the desert of Merzouga. The drive will take us through the Middle Atlas Mountains, where we can admire beautiful landscapes along the road. In the cedar forest we will have a short break and watch the Berbary monkeys playing. Then we will stop in Ifrane, which is also called the Switzerland of Morocco. You may want to take some photos before we continue our journey. To reach Merzouga, you will pass through many other villages and towns, including Timhdit, Midelt city, cross the High Atlas Mountains, Errachidia and Erfoud (famous for its fossil industry). Overnight in a hotel near the dunes.
Today we will guide you through the area and show you the interesting way of life and culture of the people in the Sahar desert. First we will visit the ancient village of Khamlia (village of the blacks). It is mainly inhabited by people who were originally brought as slaves from Sudan, Senegal and Mali. The nomads here are very nice and friendly and would be happy to share their daily life with you. The day continues with a visit to old mines near the border between Morocco and Algeria. Then we will drive back to Merzouga where you will have medfouna (also called Berber pizza) for lunch. After a short break, a camel trekking is waiting for you to experience. You will ride on camels, guided by your camel man, towards the Erg Chebbi dunes. It will take you about 1:30 minutes to reach Erg Chebbi. Besides admiring the landscapes of the vast desert, you will probably enjoy taking some nice photos. One of the most beautiful experiences is the sunset over the highest sand dunes in North Africa. After dinner you will have the opportunity to listen to the drums and music of the Berbers around the campfire.
The camel man will wake you up in the morning so you can enjoy a fascinating view of the sunrise over the high dunes. After that you will ride the camels back to Merzouga, where you will refresh and have breakfast. Then you will continue to Rissani. This city is the first seat of the Alaouite dynasty (royal family). It is best known for its large souks (traditional markets). Afterwards, we will drive via the beautiful oasis of Tinghir to the Todra Gorge. The Todra Gorge is the highest and narrowest gorge in Morocco. This makes it a special attraction for climbers. After lunch, we will drive to Ouarzazate via Dades, the Valley of the Roses, where the Cultural Festival of the Roses is held every May, and the Road of the Kasbahs of Thouasand. Ouarzazate is a famous destination for filmmakers from all over the world. Many Hollywood films have been shot in Ouarzazate, such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. And also the television series such as Prison Break season 5. Overnight in a hotel in Ouarzazate.
After breakfast we leave Ouarzazate and drive to Marrakech. On the way we will make a few stops to visit the magnificent Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the very old Kasbah of Telouet. On the way you can admire the landscape of the High Atlas and the Tizi N’Tichka pass. Overnight stay in a riad in Marrakech.
